When we think new baby, we instantly think layette, and when it comes to layettes, we are in love with the beautiful kimono-style layettes from Westcoast Baby. Made of cotton stretch jersey and super soft and cozy, their Infant Kimono Wrap features easy on and off ties and opens at the bottom for all those late night changes. Pair the kimono wrap with one of their coordinating hats for the perfect ensemble to welcome any little one into the world!

Babies are small. Yes this is a fact. My babies were both under 7lbs and surprisingly it was tough to put them in what I thought were regular newborn outfits. The second time around when baby E was born I wised up and purchased quite a few 5-8lb tops, hats, and gowns. This was very helpful since she was 3 weeks early and stayed under 8lbs for her first month or so. If I hadn't found companies that really knew how to dress a lightweight newborn she would have been swimming in clothes that were too big, unsafe, and not cozy. A un-cozy baby? Oy- what a thought.
Westcoast Baby has the right idea with their nesting kit. Complete with Infant Kimono (great for not having to put something over baby's head), Infant Beanie Hat, and Cocoon Blanket, the complete set comes in a handful of hip and cozy colors. Sizing 5-9lbs, or 8-12lbs. The nesting kit comes in a keepsake tin (so when they are done wearing their cozy outfit you can preserve it forever), and all pieces are made from a super soft knit jersey fabric.

Layette represents everything fresh and pure that came into my life with my newborn {nearly two years ago. wow..}. I only ever wanted the best for Cole, but unfortunately I was quick to be enthusiastic about an occasional pair of Diesel-esque jeans and baby Vans. He survived dress-up, but if I were to do it all over? I would embrace the 100% cotton, 100% comfortable, 100% layette wardrobe that simplifies the new beginning for both baby and parent.
Westcoast Baby is the supermodel for layette done perfectly. I've been envying their New Beginnings line for months now, thrilled about the easy-on-the-eyes design, the refreshing color options and kimono style wraps that together create a dreamy company and product. Snapless, zipperless, and buttonless outfits mean less fuss and panic, which with a newborn, can never be underappreciated!
When you thought it couldn't get better, they do the work for you. The nesting kits {recently redesigned} come complete with a Infant kimono Wrap, Infant Beanie Hat and Cocoon Blanket, making for the ideal gift or hospital bag ensemble. I celebrate simplicity.
Mommy = 1, Wiggly Baby = 0
I used to think baby clothes with snaps were the best solution for a wiry, wiggly baby. And then my brute of a son came along, and it was like wrestling a greased squealing pig into pajamas.
So take my advice ye mothers-to-be, and invest in a few kimono tops, like the fantastic new designs from one of our favorite labels, Westcoast Baby. There's just too much to love about them - they're decidedly un-babyish with a huge range of truly amazing fabrics fabrics, and the ties mean no annoying snaps. Plus they're extremely versatile, easily matched with their coordinating pants or used as a light spring jacket over a shirt and jeans.
While you're there, don't miss the brand new Nesting Kits bundled layettes, for when the sanity you're looking to save is some other new mom's. -Kristen

A surge in maternity/baby stores shows the West
Coast is fertile territory
Theres a swelling cradle of fertility on the West Coast, and
I'm not talking about Britney Spear's womb. Mabye one of
the ethnic gift shops in Kitsilano imported a charmed goddess
statue from abroad. Or perhaps there's something more than
food coloring in the gree-tea frappucinos.
Whatever the catalyst, with no fewer than 10 maternity/baby
stores in Kits these days-six of them on fourth avenue alone-
it should be only a matter of time before people start calling
the strip Baby Boulevard.
Local mothers-turned-baby-designers are powering the boom.
For example, the label Westcoast baby comes from Nicole
Vaslot and Amanda Moat, who have done pretty much everything
together since they were teens growing up in Surrey.
They sewed as a hobby and sold shoes for the same company.
When Vaslot had her first baby, Moat followed suit. She had
her first nine months later, to the day.
Moat had second child. So did Vaslot.
While they were on maternity leave, the duo decided to collaborate
and produce a line of thier own. Westcoast baby was born in March.
"Its aimed toward moms who want to be fashoinable and want thier
kids to have original style" says Moat.
Their first article was a sleek burp cloth designed to fit over a mothers
shoulder, replacing the classic billowing blanket. It comes in 20
different fabrics.
Then Vaslot hit the jackpot. Inspired ny a nightie given to her by her
Japanese relative sister-in-law, they began desgining unisex kimonos for
newborns.
"One store bought them and sold out in a day" reports Vaslot.
This spawned their Take-Me-Home Gift Set, a full meal deal of
goodies tucked into a Chinese take out box. Its a perfect present for
that first hospital visit, since it contains a kimono nightie, a matching hat
and two recieving blankets. ($59.95)
Another highlight of Westcoast baby collection is a kimono jacket made
with pure cotton and lined with minkee fur, heavenly sof plush fabric.
Westcoast baby also makes co-ordinating pants, skirts, tank tops and
onsies. Look for the line at Bobbits for Kids!(2935 W. Fourth), Chick
Pea Childrens Boutique (1706 East First), and Babys World ( 1300
Woolridge, Coquitlam, and opening soon, 1946 W. Fourth).

in thier "Great Goods" section. Fall 2005 issue, see
